2019 Run Down

This is a brief overview of 2019…..

During the year we were proud to support the awareness of marine pollution by presenting three of Ellie Jackson’s books to 14 primary schools in our area, including Chiddingly Primary School, Grovelands, Phoenix Academy and Stone Cross School.

Ellie, originally from Uckfield, East Sussex, has written true stories about the problems of ocean plastic featuring three well-loved animals – a sea turtle named Duffy, a young whale, Nelson, and Marli, a puffin. The books are perfect for the younger members of our community to engage in this issue and we will do everything we can to help the children in making a difference. This fell into line with Cllr Mary Laxton’s campaign to remove or replace single-use plastics in Hailsham.

As always we participated in the Remembrance Sunday service and laid our wreath on the war memorial. It was wonderful to see so many people in the town. We joined in Hailsham’s Light Switch On with our popular candy floss machine in November. My, we were busy that night!

Members of our Club supported Hailsham Festival’s launch in September and were in the audience for The Greatest Showman singalong film, among other special events during the Festival’s two week period. We will be supporting the Festival again in 2020.

Our Family Fun Day in July in conjunction with Hailsham Active was a great success and the weather was kind! With our Dog Show, Fun Fair, Hailsham FM’s presence and loads of other attractions, we think everyone had a fabulous afternoon. Next year will be our last Fun Day.

With the money we raised from the town’s generous residents, we were able to help Kid’s Count, the Food Bank, Hygiene Bank, Care for Carers, 105SE Diabetes Foundation, Environment Hailsham, Libra, Hailsham Swimming Club, S.C.D.A., Blind Association, Royal British Legion, and purchased a bed, fridge, mobility scooter, defibrillator, car seat and other items for families in need.

And, of course, there’s our popular Book Shop, opposite the market in Hailsham. It goes from strength to strength each year which is very rewarding. So why not pay us a visit!

In 2020 Hailsham Lions celebrates its 50th birthday. Formed on 7 May 1970 with 20 members, we have been helping and caring for local people since then. We have lined up some special events for the town, including the first Diabetes Awareness ‘pop in’ day. Others will be advertised in due course, but meantime, thank you for supporting us in our endeavours to help others in need.
