Hello everyone:

My, it’s so good to be back after all these months as life returns to some kind of normality.  The pandemic hit us all badly;  so many people suffered and lost their lives, while others took on the huge challenge of helping others who were in need.  My heart goes out to them in condolence and appreciation.  Each one a hero.

During those difficult months Hailsham Lions were actively working behind the scenes, assisting where we could to support our local community, even though it felt like we had one hand tied behind our backs.  Like all charities, we were unable to fundraise which meant we had limited funds to work with.  However, I think we managed to offer a helping hand on several levels.

I won’t list them all but suffice to say we assisted charities like Kids Count, Sunflower Mental Health, our local Food Bank, the NHS Angels, Marie Curie and Environment Hailsham.  We were also able to help with equipment for young people moving into their own homes with washing machines, beds and other household items, a child’s buggie and local schools.

Of all our fundraising events, we missed not welcoming visitors to our Book Shop.  However, during the lockdown we revamped it and now have extended shelves of books, jigsaws and so on.  It was a great thrill to welcome back our customers.  Our planned Family Fun Day 2020 was postponed which was a huge disappointment, particularly as it coincided with the Club’s 50th anniversary.  Although it was a year late, we celebrated our birthday in grand style with Jayne Torvill opening the event.  More about that elsewhere.

So moving on with a positive mind, I’m delighted to confirm we have dusted down our much loved candy floss machine and will be hosting our popular tombolas later this year. Next year we are hoping to organise other fundraising events now that we are back meeting face-to-face each month.  Zoom meetings and email exchanges were, of course, a lifeline to a Club like ours, but you can’t beat the real thing!

Hailsham Lions are here to serve. Should you need our help please phone 0345 8339828 or email and we will do what we can.
